Got up pretty early Saturday morning for a chance to photograph this bird on the flight line before things got too crowded. Given the size of this beast it’s a good thing I brought my wide glass along. It’s amazing what a little High-Speed HDR magic can produce.

Shot taken with a Canon 40D hand-held, EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM at 17mm, f/11 for 1/125th, 1/45th and 1/15th of a second at ISO 100 on SanDisk digital film. The HDR file was made from three RAW images tone-mapped in Photomatix Pro. All other processing was done in Lightroom 2 and Noise Ninja. Click on the image above for a larger version.

Thanks Brian!
I took 4000 images at the air show and this was one of the first that day and my favorite. It looks really good in print also.

Great HDR. Not over the top like so many others out there!
Thanks Tom,
I got to the Ellington Field at dawn and saw this big C17 sitting there just waiting to be photographed. Friday night I was reading Sam Abell’s latest book where he talks about “waiting for the right moment”. I guess some of that photographic wisdom must have sunk into my tired old brain. I took three quick bracketed exposures and after “chimping” (to look at the histogram), I knew I had a good HDR candidate.

This is Just wonderful!!!
While I really like the picture you’ve made, I’m loving the shadow!! It comes right at you. Nice job getting that Tail between the sun and the glass.
