Shot taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III with GP-E2 unit attached, set on aperture (Av) priority using an EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens and tripod mounted. The exposure was taken at 24mm, f/16 for 1/125th of a second at ISO 100 using a Singh-Ray warming polarizer filter. Post capture processing was done in Adobe’s Lightroom 4.

Hi Jeff,
I love the exposure it brings out the color of the leaves and the blue in the sky. I have a lot of trouble getting the sky to the blue I want it usually has too much cyan. I know you use the warming polarizer most of the time on your outdoor pics I would like to learn more about what it is you like most about it. Does it help with Canon’s tendency to have blue shadows? I participated in one of your State Park workshops a couple years ago. Would like to do something else with you. I now have 2 good knees and a Sing-Ray Warming Polarizer and looking forward to using it.

Nice hearing from you again. There are a few ways to fix Canon’s normally “cold” white balance setting. You can correct it by setting a custom white balance in the camera or by using a warming polarizer like I do. Of course, if you shoot in RAW, you can always correct the white balance during post capture processing. I’ve always used a warming polarizer since I normally shoot with a polarizer anyway. Another trick is to use a graduated neutral density filter along with the polarizer to help balance the exposure in the foreground and background.
